🍫 Nana’s Famous Chocolate Cake

Soft, fudgy, deeply chocolatey… and even better the next day.

🛒 Ingredients

🍰 Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (room temp)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs (room temp)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)

🍫 Nana’s Chocolate Fudge Frosting

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • ⅔ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup milk (adjust as needed)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans (or one 9×13 for a classic sheet cake).

2️⃣ Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3️⃣ Add Wet Ingredients

Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until combined.

Slowly stir in hot coffee. (The batter will be thin — that’s the secret to moisture!)

4️⃣ Bake

  • 9-inch rounds: 30–35 minutes
  • 9×13 pan: 35–40 minutes

Toothpick should come out with moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool completely before frosting.

🍫 Make Nana’s Fudge Frosting

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat.
  2. Stir in cocoa until smooth.
  3. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar + milk gradually.
  4. Add vanilla + salt.
  5. Beat until creamy and spreadable.

Frost generously. Nana didn’t believe in thin frosting layers 😌

💛 Nana’s Tips

  • Use hot coffee — it deepens the chocolate flavor (you won’t taste coffee).
  • Let cake rest overnight for even richer flavor.
  • Add chopped pecans if your Nana was Southern.
