Hot Cross Buns


Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¾ cup raisins or currants

🥣 Steps:

  1. Activate yeast: Mix warm milk + yeast + a little sugar → let sit 5–10 mins.
  2. Add butter, egg, sugar, spices, salt, and flour → knead until soft dough forms.
  3. Fold in raisins.
  4. Let rise 1–1.5 hours (until doubled).
  5. Shape into balls, place close together in a pan.
  6. Let rise again (30–45 mins).

✝️ Cross (before baking):

Mix:

  • ½ cup flour + 5 tbsp water → make a paste
    Pipe a cross over each bun.

🔥 Bake:

  • 180°C (350°F) for 20–25 mins until golden.

🍯 Glaze (for that shine):

  • Warm 2 tbsp apricot jam or honey + 1 tbsp water
    Brush over hot buns → gives that glossy finish like your picture ✨
